Short description of project:

The Institute of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing successfully completed the Digital Aerial Photograph Archive project on 30th June 2014. In accordance with the Hungarian law, the goal was to digitize the archive analogous films and organize them into a single database. Additionally, it was planned to allow their online access to public administration, authorities, as well as to civil customers.

Preparatory pressurized rooms were established for the cleaning and scanning of the films. By the end of the project, FÖMI had finished scanning 15% of the aerial images of the aerial photo archive,) prioritizing the ones in poor condition, mainly from the period between 1959 and1966. The metadata were recorded from the logbooks of the flights; then the photographic frame centres were digitized.

Beside the digitization, a gateway to the aerial photo archive of FÖMI was also created. This web portal (www.fentrol.hu) allows the public authorities and the civil customers to browse or download aerial images (including also georeference data). Registered users (registration is open and free) can also tag or comment a photo.

As the location of some aerial images is not perfectly defined, users can edit the photos by moving, rotating or changing the scale. This crowdsourcing technique ensures the further improvement of the online published images. For this, editing points can be earned depending on the uncertainty of the definition of the aerial image place.
